We took Cooper to the pediatrician yesterday for his 3 year visit. Neither of us were surprised to see his weight & height are still off the charts.
Weight: 41.5 lbs
Height: 41.5 inches
Does that make him symmetrical?
For the first time, we had to do the vision test. Cooper was a little confused at having to wear the glasses & kept saying they were broken and that he didn't need them. Once we convinced him that was part of the "game" he went with it & did fine.
The doctor came in and looked him over - noting that his vocabulary is pretty good. I mentioned that he asks a LOT of questions and that's always a good sign. He's doing very well with everything according to the milestones. The rest of his check-up went great and the bonus was that we did not need any shots!
Here are few things Cooper has done recently that crack us up.
The day before his birthday party, we sat out a few gifts from us & his aunts that were wrapped. He took one look at them and said "Mom! Santa came!"
We bought into the Elf on the Shelf idea and Cooper has the funniest pair of Elf pajamas from his Aunt Carla. One evening after putting them on, he ran downstairs because he needed to tell Elf that he looked like him.
I can't imagine him being more excited for Christmas than he his this year. Every day he asks if it is Christmas Day and if we can open presents. He loves to listen to the Christmas music and watch any Christmas movie. As soon as we get in the car, he starts singing along. Even if the songs aren't playing!
We've been talking about the Christmas Story quite a bit and Cooper thinks Baby Jesus's parents are Jophes and Married. I tried correcting him, but it really is just too funny and cute.
Santa visited the daycare earlier this month. Cooper isn't a fan of anyone in costume - especially characters like the Easter Bunny or Woody from Toy Story who visited a restaurant earlier this year. I pumped up Santa hoping he'd be past his fear and we talked about how he could tell Santa what he wanted for Christmas. Everything was going well until Jason mentioned he would need to sit on Santa's lap. He got very serious and said "No. That man is scary." We explained that if you don't, you won't be able to tell him what you want for Christmas. Cooper responded with "I don't want nofing." The next morning I told him he could stand beside Santa. This was the result.
I'm pretty sure the candy cane was the only thing that got him close to that scary man.

Happy Halloween!
I started asking Cooper weeks ago what he wanted to be for Halloween. His first and only response was Batman. Jason and I ordered a costume early so that we wouldn't make 100 trips across Houston looking for one the week before Halloween. That's how I roll - I'm either crazy prepared and early, or pushing things to the last minute.
Unfortunately, a few days before Halloween we realized we should try the costume on. It was a little snug and I did sort of try to find a bigger size. After a few misses, we decided to roll with it. It would work for one night. Sadly, he'll outgrow it in a month but I'm not 100% sure it will last that long.
For weeks, Cooper has been asking if it was Halloween Day. When he came down Wednesday, he was thrilled to finally hear that it was actually Halloween Day! Halloween morning I sent him to school with his costume for their party. We talked for two days about how he'd have to take the costume off after the party, but I still had my doubts. Surprisingly, I picked him up that afternoon in his shorts & trick or treat shirt!
Once we got home I ordered pizza and did my best to keep Cooper from putting his costume on before Jason got there. Once Jason scarfed down his pizza, we hit the streets.
I grabbed a few quick photos before Cooper took off running.
We started off by hitting up the neighbors houses. Cooper was more than excited this year. I stressed to him that he needed to remember to say Trick or Treat and Thank You.
Cooper thought it was necessary to tell everyone he was Batman. He also thought the cuffs on his sleeves were guns and would start "shooting" at other kids on the street. I got tickled when some of the homeowners would ask the obligatory "Well, who are you?" Cooper would respond with "My name is Co... I'm BATMAN!"
After a few streets and an almost full bucket of candy, we decided to head home. Batman wanted to see a few more houses, but he also wanted us to carry him so we knew he was done. He walked in, sat down, and started going through the bucket of candy. I managed to hold him to 1 piece before putting it all away.
We finally managed to talk him out of his costume before sending him to bed. The next morning I asked if he knew what day it was (Thursday) and he said "It's Christmas Day!"
We've got some learning to do regarding days, it seems.

A little weekend fun
I've been really lazy about using my camera lately. It is just so easy to grab my phone...but the photos are never as good!
A few weeks ago I made a point to carry the camera around the house. Cooper spent some time playing upstairs while Jason worked on the a/c unit in the attic.

Holding down the fort
Last month we made a trip to The Ranch to visit my family for my mom's birthday. When we got there, Cooper & Zeth started playing like boys do. They grabbed their toy guns and decided to man the fort. You know, just in case any bad guys decided to come by.
We were all very well protected!

Phone Friday 8/17
Last Friday we met Bear, Bridget & Adalynn at the Astros game.
Aunt Sassy came along and treated Cooper to some Cotton Candy.
After the game, we showed Cooper our Astros Brick.
Cooper loves Baby Adalynn!
Monday afternoon we escaped for a walk to the park. I'm only slightly annoyed that our park is filled with sand & not mulch or something less...sandy. Because that crap get everywhere.
Cheese!

Cooper woke up pretty early this morning, so we had extra snuggle time before school.
Last Sunday night was rough in our house. Cooper woke up at 11:45 screaming. Jason headed upstairs to check on him and I followed soon after - it wasn't a normal Cooper-scream. We tried calming him down a bit and I offered to lay with him. However, he kept screaming & started calling for Daddy. We took him out of his room (because it is easily 10 degrees warmer in his room than the rest of the second floor) and took his temperature. The whole time he would slightly calm down, only to get worked up again & scream like a banshee. Finally we offered our bed.
He mentioned that his foot hurt, so we tried getting him to drink water thinking it was a cramp. I also thought it might have been a night terror, though he was awake & responsive and it lasted over an hour. Then I thought growing pains. Really, I'm praying it wasn't growing pains. I turned on the tv (thank you DVR & Cars) and he finally started to settle down. The tylenol kicked in and he slept for a few hours, only to wake up screaming again & running fever. He ended up running a low grade fever Monday and Jason stayed home with him. That was the first time in a long time where I felt like a helpless parent - even though Cooper can talk, I had no idea what was wrong & it sucked. Thankfully he's been good the rest of the week & we were fully equipped with coffee in the house.
Last Saturday we grabbed lunch with Bear, Bridget & Aly before they headed home. Rachel joined us and hung out for a while after. On the way from Chuy's something was said about going to Academy. Cooper asked Rachel if she "likes going to Acada-you?" I asked if he meant Academy and he said "yeah, Acada-you." We got a kick out of that.
Sunday morning Jason & I were getting dressed and realized it was way too quiet. He started to look for Cooper and I heard him ask what he was doing. Cooper's reply: Nothing. Just coloring on the wall.
Thankfully it was a pencil, however I cracked up at how casual his response was. Like it was his job. We bought a Magic Eraser that day.

Pop Quiz
I've seen this on blogs & Kelly has done it a few times with Eileen. I've tried asking Cooper questions before, but he hasn't really gotten the idea and most of the answers end up being something he's playing with or eating at the time.
Yesterday we walked to the park to get out of the house & I quizzed him on the way.
What is your favorite book?
-Going on a bear hunt (he just read that book earlier in the afternoon)
What is your favorite movie?
-Mater (and he'd just watched Mater's Tall Tales before our walk)
What is your favorite song?
-Jesus loves me the little children (this would be a combination of Jesus Loves Me & Jesus Loves the Little Children. He prefers to combine them on a regular basis which makes a sing-along impossible)
What is your favorite color?
-Red like Spiderman & Lightening McQueen & Mater
What makes you happy?
-Milk
What makes mommy happy?
-Coffee
What makes daddy happy?
-Coffee too!
What makes you sad?
-Like when I cry? (this really confused him)
What are you going to be when you grow up?
-A swimming pool (we happened to pass the pool when I asked this and I couldn't get a different answer out of him)
What is your favorite thing to eat?
-Pizza and oranges

Phone...Friday 8/10
One day I'll catch up. But for now, I won't dwell on it.
Last weekend we had a little Slip N Slide fun.
A few months ago, Cooper started to talk about seeing babies at the hospital. We'd seen some when we visited my grandmother earlier this year. I explained that we can go after our friends had their babies. Since then he's been talking about babies in tummies. I have been waiting for him to ask the random non-pregnant woman at Target, but have been lucky. Until last week. When he decided to ask a dad at school if he had a baby in his tummy. I wasn't there, but I am pretty sure I felt more embarrassed than I would have if it had been a stranger at Target. At least the odds of me seeing that person again were slim to none. This dad...I usually see him 2-3 times a week.
Last week was a bit rough. Cooper started waking up super early - between 5 & 6:15. Then we had a few accidents that really threw everything off. By Thursday, we were all tired & I had confiscated Skippyjon Jones as a result for too many accidents. Today, we're back on track and if he has no accidents at school he'll get the Siamese-cat-who-thinks-he's-a-chiuaua back.

Phone Friday 7/27
I'm thinking I may need to change these to Phone Monday posts, but for now I'll just try to resolve to get back on track.
Last weekend we had tickets to see The Lion King, so Jason's parents came in to visit & watch Cooper. They arrived with a new toy for Cooper & he spent the weekend flying around the house.
One of Cooper's favorite afternoon activities is to get the mail. It is something I understand. I remember being home on maternity leave and waiting for the mail carrier to drive by so that I could make a quick run outside to see what was there. It isn't that I really look forward to what is IN the mail, it was more the idea of getting up & going outside to do something. I felt the same way when I started working from home. It takes a lot of discipline to wait on Cooper before getting the mail!
He hops in his car and we take off toward the mailbox. The trip there is spent with me asking him to stay off of our neighbors grass, turn left or right, and to slow down. We grab the mail & head back to park McQueen in the garage.
Cooper has started asking to wear his sunglasses when we're in the car. I'm not sure why - I'm pretty well convinced that he can't see out of them or that they don't fit right, but either way I let it go. Mostly because when he slides them up on his head the way we do I get a kick out of it.
Cooper is doing great with the potty training. Last weekend was a challenge. He had a bit of an upset stomach and spent a lot of time familiarizing himself with the bathroom. Sorry for the TMI. I was very proud of him for telling us he needed to go, even if he did tell us 5+ times per day and he announced loudly during the sermon Sunday that he needed to go poop. We had one accident when he asked to go in Kroger & we were on the other side of the store.
That said, I also had my most embarrassing parent moment to date. I arrived Thursday to pick Cooper up from school & found him not in what I sent him in. Assuming he'd had an accident, I asked him what happened. The teachers started laughing and chimed in telling him that he needed to tell me what happened. I could tell Cooper was embarrassed & reluctant to share so I sat down next to him & asked the teachers for more information. Apparently all of the kids were on the playground on the other side of the playscape and when the teacher when to see why they were gathered around she was shocked to find Cooper - pants down, relieving himself.
At that moment, I started to laugh. I felt bad, but that wasn't what I expected to hear! Cooper was still mortified, which made it a little funnier and then they added that when they started to fuss at him he looked at the teachers as if they were crazy. After I composed myself, I apologized. 15 times. And explained that he's allowed to do that at home if we're in the backyard. I'd rather him do that than track dirty & mud across the house. I quickly added that we'd have a good talk about where he could pee in the future & headed home, making sure to add that if the other parents wondered why their kids suddenly wanted to use the bathroom outside, they could blame it on Cooper's mom. I mean, he has an Aunt Sassy & a horse - it is pretty obvious where to place the blame.

The joys of potty training
I'm using joy in the loosest way possible. Potty training is for the birds. Or for people who are more patient than I am. I knew that going into it, but I still decided a few weeks ago that we were done. Daycare asked me to send more pull-ups to school and I didn't want to drop another $30 at Target on something I didn't get to enjoy. We were going to be home for a few days, so that night we stopped at Target to pick out big boy underwear.
I let Cooper decide what he wanted. I thought he might go for Buzz Lightyear or Lightning McQueen...but he went strait for the Super Hero package. And was not budging on an alternative. The next morning I put on some big boy underwear and off we went. Thankfully we were spending the weekend in the yard & garage, so accidents were not going to be the end of the world. We had a few, ended up having to ditch Wolverine, but by the time he went to school Monday he had the hang of it.
The past few weeks have gone pretty well. He figured out quickly that he would be wearing diapers for bedtime & naptime, so he saved his #2's until that point. He also learned that he could manipulate us. I knew he was good at it, but he's a pro. Want out of the grocery cart? Ask to pee. Want to get down from the table? Ask to pee. Want to stop the car? Ask to pee. Last weekend he peed 4 times in Kroger. Only because he didn't want to ride in the cart.
Last week we decided to reward him with pooping in the potty. I lined the mantle with rainy day toys and told him that every time he used the potty and not his diaper, he'd get a new toy. Monday morning we left for school with a new tractor in hand! I'm pretty sure by the end of the weekend he'll have all of his toys in hand!
As trying as the process has been, Cooper caught on quickly. And the best part...I feel like I've gotten a raise!

Super Hero Cowboy
Most days I fight Cooper on what to wear. I know, I should let it go, but I'm blaming this on my mom. I'm about 99.9% sure that my sister I never left the house in something that didn't match or wasn't ironed. To make up for it, I didn't inherit the ironing gene - I have a love affair with my dryer.
When we're at home, though, Cooper can just about wear whatever he wants. Rainboots on a sunny day? Sure. Aggie marroon shorts & a red shirt? No problem. Cowboy hat, Cars slippers & super hero cape? You got it.
During the whole process, he started quoting the Good Night, Texas book by saying "Ride 'em Cowboy! Yee haw!"
Also, yes we let Cooper play with toy guns. Mostly he just walks around holding the trigger and making a LOT of noise.

Who knew?
Last week we were driving around and Cooper started to sing his ABC's. Apparently he knows how to do that now. He mixes up a few letters, but we were pretty impressed. And he's a glutton for attention - every time we cheered him on & clapped, he would sing them again.

A little rain...
If you're not from Texas, you may not know that we had a quite extreme drought this year. Like we could only water the lawn twice a week, the lakes are completely dry and some restaurants quit automatically bringing water to the table unless requested. That kind of drought. The really scary part - it sparked some major fires this summer.
Lately, though, we've been getting a little rain. Sometimes more than just a little - twice this month we've had some flooding. Unfortunately, it isn't quite enough rain to put us back where we need to be, but it is nice to see green yards again. Cooper got a rain coat & umbrella from his Granna & Papa. I let him wear the rain coat to school last week, but it ended up causing a fight. Apparently one of his friends wanted to see his jacket, and the end result was that his friend bit him. Cooper keeps telling me who did it, but I'm not sure I believe him since this kid has never been a biter.
It is a cute rain coat though, so who knows!
Today I let him walk around outside a bit with his umbrella before we left. Since I didn't want to cause anymore altercations in the classroom, we left the umbrella in the car.
One of Cooper's favorite snacks happens to be the little baby oranges - the Cuties. I think they're pretty good, but I'm fairly certain he could eat the entire bag in one day if I let him. He can open the fridge, open the drawer and get them out. Yesterday, though, he decided he wanted to peel it. I put him in his chair at the bar and let him go. I offered help, but he kept telling me he wanted to do it by himself. I encouraged him, told him that I was proud of him for being patient and not getting upset that it was taking a while. And then he cracked me up - he said "I did it! I proud of me."
The only downside to this, is that I can see him feeding himself oranges from now on. Remember how I said he could eat the whole bag??

Sundays
A few weeks ago, I spent some time building Cooper up to go to Sunday School. We quit trying several months ago because he was miserable. He started crying in the parking lot and by the time we got close to the door, he was hysterical. We left. Since then, we've been trying to keep him quiet in the church. Sometime before Christmas he started to understand that we were going to listen to stories about Baby Jesus and that he had to be quiet. He made it through most of the service, but never the whole thing. This week, I decided he was going back.
I built up Sunday School - he could sing songs and color and play. Last Sunday we talked about how fun Sunday School would be and he talked about how he wanted to go to church. He was fine...until we got to the room. After church, they said he'd cried for about ten minutes, and then played. Then, I tested the water.
Me: Cooper, did you have fun at Sunday School.
Cooper: Yeah, I had fun.
Me: Do you want to go back?
Cooper: No, I go to church.
Yesterday was much of the same - he did a little crying on the way in, we shoved him in the door and turned around. He would be fine. After, I asked him again if he had fun (he did) and if he wanted to go back (he didn't). His new trick is to tell us that he'll be quiet and listen in church. I don't quite believe him.
Last weekend, Cooper kept talking about a fire truck. He wanted to ride in his fire truck. That made sense - he has one on the back porch. Only...he didn't really care to ride in it. Sunday we realized he was singing. I Googled it and figured out there is a song about riding in a fire truck. When Cooper says it though, it sounds like this:
fir-rah shruck...fir-rah shruck...I want ride on my fir-ruh shruck.

Catching up
2011 had some ups and downs. I won't elaborate, but for a while there I was ready for a Happy Freaking New Year. And then it changed and I learned a very important lesson that life is mine to live, but not to control. That said, this year hasn't really started with a bang. Well, I guess it has. Fireworks, to be exact.
Let me go back a bit. When we visited Jason's parents Cooper started acting funny. He just didn't want to sleep and asked us to lay down beside him. I didn't give it too much thought, thinking he was just a little off from the travel and all of the holiday excitement. We came home New Years Eve and that was the Big Bang. Turns out, my kid is terrified of fireworks. And because NYE was on a Saturday, we got two full freaking days of fireworks. Two full days of a toddler trying to crawl into our skin. Two nights of him begging to stay up and watch a movie or sleep with us. In fact, after we came home on NYE, we put him to bed, only to wake up an hour later with him climbing over me and into the middle of our bed.
And that was just the beginning. Since then, we've all be a little sleep deprived. Some days are better than others. But the others...well, last night for example he was awake at 12:30, 1, 1:15 and 2:45. I am pretty sure that's what a 6 week growth spurt would look like, only he's not eating during the night. I've pretty well tried everything - bribery, sticker charts, cry it out (that ended when he climbed on top of the dresser) and just sleeping on the floor. Yesterday we started a new strategy and well...I'll say last night was mildly successful. He was still up, but we only sat next to his bed for 10 minutes at a time. Right now, that's the best I can hope for.
Have I mentioned how much I love coffee???
On a different note...here are few funny things he's done recently.
Before Christmas, my mom's dog Tuff was sick. Tuff is a teeny tiny teacup poodle, so him being sick isn't good. I called Rachel to chat and brought it up and said if something happens to that dog, this will be the "Worst.Christmas.Ever." Tuff got better (he ate an acorn) and I told the story to my mom a few weeks later. Sitting in the backseat, Cooper yells out "Worst. Christmas. EVER!"
I have a bad habit. I've learned some bad words and I'm trying to unlearn them. But I'm having a hard time with crap. I don't think it is that bad, but Cooper probably doesn't need to go to school saying crap every 15 seconds. Last week I was driving and said crap. Cooper immediately told me that it was a bad word. Jason asked if I should go to time out and Cooper's response was "ummmmmmmmmmm......" I think that must happen at school!
He's discovered how to be silly. Who knew? I also get amazed at how well he talks. Jason and I went out of town this weekend and when we got home I told him that I missed him. He replied "I missed momma." Heart: melted.

Christmas Eve
Christmas Eve we woke up, finished loading the car and headed to Nana's house. Aunt Sassy drew the short straw at work, so she put in four 12-hour nights in a row from Friday to Monday. We were able to celebrate Christmas Eve, though, with lunch and gifts. We let Cooper & Zeth go first, since their attention span is just a little short.
Cooper unwrapped the gift from Lin & Adam first - another Peanut! We laughed at the fact that he knew exactly what to do with a stick horse and started running around the house.
The last thing Cooper opened was courtesy of his Pops. Apparently the last trip Cooper took to visit them, he found a few of Zeth's toy guns (that make a lot of noise) and carried them around. So Pops went in search of some really loud, noisy guns that would allow Cooper to have just as much fun at home as he does there. :-/ As soon as Cooper figured out that it made noise, he was a happy camper.

After the kids opened gifts, we all took our turns as adults. Jason got a bunch of fishing stuff and we both got the newest love of my life - a Keurig. Seriously, I love the fact that I can have coffee any time of the day without making a bigger pot. However, I have a feeling my coffee consumption may get a little excessive. We all sat down for lunch and spent the rest of the afternoon prepping for Christmas day and trying to rest a little. Finally we started to get ready for church. And that was when the real fun began.
About 5:50, Jason walked into our room and asked where Cooper's suitcase was. I'm pretty sure the look on my face explained it, but instead tried hoping I was wrong. I tried to think that Jason had brought it in. It only took 30 seconds for us to realize we knew exactly where it was - our house. 2 hours away.
For the record, Cooper arrived that morning in jeans, a Christmas t-shirt, his Big Truck sweatshirt (above) and his new Lightning McQueen house shoes. We quickly decided that Jason would run to Wal-Mart and purchase things for the rest of the weekend. Thankfully, I'd thrown his coat into the car & his boots were in Jason's bag. I ironed his jeans to remove the wax that he'd just spilled on to them from a Scentsy warmer (thank goodness those don't burn!) and we made it to church. I was reminded the next week that at his age, most people would assume he insisted on wearing his Big Truck sweatshirt, and that probably would have been a safe assumption had we shown up in the Cars slippers. Jason found a few pair of pajamas and he knows my guilty-mother heart well, because he even found one pair of Christmas pjs. Can you imagine the mommy guilt I would have if he spent Christmas in non-Christmas pjs? :-)

Happy Birthday Cooper!
We decided to celebrate Cooper's actual birthday by taking him out to dinner & to look at Christmas lights. He is loving the lights this year and I'm a little sad that in a few weeks they'll be gone. I've enjoyed taking a detour on the way home daily to check out a few displays.
My plan was a regular old restaurant, however Jason thought we needed to do something "fun." I also had a bit of mom-guilt going. Since Cooper had gotten sick during the party, he wasn't keen on blowing out candles and eating cake. I baked up a thick chocolate chip cookie and we headed out to Chuck E Cheese.
We typically don't frequent restaurants that have video games. I'm pretty sure I've never been around Cooper when he's played them, so I can't even say he ever has. But the general idea behind Chuck E Cheese must be a part of toddler DNA. We walked in, Cooper took one look around, his eyes grew to the size of small dinner plates and he yelled "I go PLAAAAAYYYYYY!" And just like that, he was off.
Thankfully, Cooper doesn't know if a game is working, so we only bought a few tokens. Plus, his attention span is only 3.5 seconds long. He'd run to a game, punch some buttons and run away.
I tried getting him to sit down by distracting him with a few rounds of Angry Birds.
Then Chuck E Cheese came out of his door and Cooper freaked. Being the mean mother that I am, I told him that if he didn't sit down and finish his pizza, the mouse would get him and make him sit down to eat. I did feel a little bad when Cooper kept telling my sister "that mouse come get you." He finally ate some pizza, a cookie and played a few more games before we headed out.
We drove through a few subdivisions to check out lights, and then came home to open some of the gifts we held back.
Happy 2nd Birthday Cooper! Next time, I'm just going to send him with Kelly & Eileen. She's a Chuck E Cheese pro. :-)

So soon?
I got my first "mean mommy" last night. Cooper has figured out how to open both the fridge and the freezer. He's more fascinated with the freezer, which makes me worry I'll wake up one morning to a pool of water and a freezer full of defrosted food. So, last night I planted myself against the door and suggested he go play with his toys. He swung his foot in my direction and muttered "mean mommy."
I swear he was five. I quickly turned around, swallowed the giggle, and put him in time out. A few minutes later, he apologized and we talked about how we don't call people names. As funny as it was at the time, it did make me a little sad. Not that he said it - that will happen again. And I'm sure one day I'll hear worse, but sad that he's old enough to know what to say, when to say it, and why. Already???
And for further proof that he's growing up way too fast...he redeemed himself by saying his prayers last night. I've started saying them each night and he follows me up with a big old "AMEN!" That would be the Baptist coming out. This week we've been trying to get him to repeat after us. Last night I started with "Now I lay me" and he jumped right in with "down to sleep." He has been paying attention! Most nights it is a struggle to be still, take the Monkey out & stop playing with Mickey Mouse. But, even through all of the, he listens.
Now...if I could just get him to listen to me when I tell him not to open the freaking freezer, we'd be doing great. Don't worry, Amazon will be supplying locks soon.

The Relative Hangover
Yesterday my sister came over to spend the afternoon with Cooper. After dinner, I jokingly asked him if he wanted to go to Aunt Sassy's house to spend the night. He brought me his suitcase.
This is kind of what his face looked like after we packed his bags, loaded her car and kissed goodbye. Looks real broke up, right?
Later this afternoon I'm going to pick him up from her house. I'm bracing myself for this face.
Anyone else see the problem here? This is what I like to call The Relative Hangover.
