One week old & a day of firsts
- trip out of the house
- visit to the pedi
- blow-out diaper
- Hollywood photo session
When we got up for the morning my mom mentioned that his left eye looked a little goopy and it seemed like he had a hard time getting it open. We both watched him for a while and decided to call the pedi just in case it was an early sign of a cold. They called back and decided to let us go ahead come in for a visit because of his age. We actually managed to stuff down some sandwiches for lunch, pack his diaper bag, get stuff in the car and get him changed in less than an hour. AND that included the first blow-out diaper. Boy was that a mess all over his clothes and changing pad. And it made us feel better about taking him since it was really watery (sorry!).
We made it to the office and back to see the pedi. They weighed him, of course, and he'd lost about 7oz putting Cooper at 9lbs 15oz. Dr. K came back and looked him over, well, at least she tried. He would not wake up! It's hard to look at the eyes when they just won't open. We finally got them open and she concluded that it's a clogged tear duct. We're supposed to wipe it off with a warm cloth and massage around the duct to stimulate it.
After the visit we made it back home just in time for Jess and her mom to come by for a visit. Jess has an awesome camera and loves taking photos of babies so I let her go at it. By the end of her visit Cooper was wondering when we'd up and moved to Hollywood. I guess that's why Viula calls it the Mamarazzi!
Here are some of the photos and our 1 week old photo shot. I'm really going to try and do this weekly to see how much he's grown - however he's already bigger than his teddy bear!

Welcome to the world!
I headed to recovery while Jason and Cooper went to the nursery. They needed to monitor me for a while and get my body temperature up. From past surgeries I know one reaction I have is to shiver like crazy. Even if I'm not cold, I shake. The heated blankets they threw on were a relief and I finally started to feel ok.The rest of his birthday was spent meeting more family members. I felt surprisingly well but tired.

In less than 24 hours...
I went in this morning for one last doctors appointment and a trip to the hospital for pre-op. Dr. F wanted to take a guess at the kids weight before tomorrow. After feeling around on my belly for a while she came up with 9.5lbs. I kind of agree! Especially when my 39 week belly measured at 45 weeks. No wonder it feels like I'm carrying around a freaking watermelon!! And I'm not talking about those cute little mini ones at the store. I'm talking about the full sized ones. Like on Dirty Dancing.
I will admit that I had some second guesses last week after we scheduled the c/s for tomorrow. I wondered if I was doing it too early and if maybe we were jumping the gun, etc. But as of today he's just not dropping and I'm still at 1cm. Combine that with his size and my fear about my hip...and I feel 100% sure that I'm doing the right thing. I've had a few contractions, but nothing regular and I feel like if I were to wait this out...I'd still be blogging at 41 weeks with an even bigger kid. I also feel like I'd either really do damage to my hip or we'd end up with an emergency c/s...or both.
So for now, I'm back at work wrapping a few things up. Our plan for the night is to grab dinner as soon as Jason gets home and finish some things around the house. I also want to load up the car - just in case I forget something. And Jason is being a great husband and taking me to breakfast at 2am. Yes, you read that right. I can't eat after 4am and, well, if you know me well enough you know that when I get hungry it's not pretty. So I'm going to try and stay full as long as possible by loading up with a good hearty breakfast from 59 Diner. I may even opt for a milkshake. :-)

Our last kid free weekend
More pumpkin, please
Pumpkin Spiced Cream Cheese Crescent Rolls from Lauren's Kitchen
- 2 packages/cans Pillsbury Crescent Rolls
- 4 0z cream cheese, softened
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup canned pumpkin
- 1/4 t ground cinnamon
- 1/8 t fresh ground nutmeg
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Unroll crescent rolls to form 4 rectangles placed side by side. ((After I did this I tried to roll them up, I decided that next time I'll just do them 2 rectangles at a time - much easier to roll.)) Pinch seams together to form one long rectangle. Beat cream cheese, brown sugar, pumpkin, cinnamon and nutmeg with a mixer. Spread mixture over crescents leaving a 1/2 inch border around edges. Starting at long end, roll up then cut into 1" pieces. Place around 2 9" inch round pans that have been sprayed with cooking spray. ((I used my two round Pampered Chef stones, so I did not use cooking spray.)) Bake for 28-30 minutes or until rolls are golden brown. Remove and let cool for 10 minutes. Frost warm rolls with cream cheese frosting recipe below.
- 4 oz softened cream cheese
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1/2 t vanilla
- 1 T canned pumpkin
Mix all ingredients in a large bowl until smooth. Spread over warm rolls.
We both really liked these. Jason's comment was that everything with pumpkin in it sort of tastes the same. Hopefully this means I can try more recipes. I think I cut them a little large because they fell over while baking, but they still tasted good. And when we reheated them the next day I threw them in the oven again - we thought they were still pretty good.
Give me a kiss
- 2/3 cup unsalted butter at room temp
- 1/2 cup peanut butter
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 egg
- 2 T milk
- 1 t vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 cup flour
- 1/2 t salt
- 1 t baking soda
- granulated sugar
- Hershey's Kisses
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Cream the first 4 ingredients in a medium size mixing bowl. Beat in the milk and vanilla. Add the next three dry ingredients until well blended. Form the cookies into 1" balls and roll in granulated sugar before placing them on a greased cookie sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are slightly brown. Remove from the oven and press in the unwrapped Hugs (or Kisses). Move to a cooling rack and let them cool completely.
I actually burned the first batch. I haven't burned cookies in...well, forever. I'm blaming it on Jason. He made me sit down on the sofa to get off of my feet and I wasn't sure how long to bake these. I usually just bake cookies until they look right. Well, I started to smell these in the living room and knew I'd just lost 1 dozen cookies. Still, I managed to get 37 good ones out of the batch. Plenty, if you ask me.

Tailgating

It was nice to spend time with family and we brought home a lot of much needed stuff for the kid. Especially a rocking horse. Every kid needs a rocking horse and my sister took on the responsibility of buying one for Cooper. Poor Jett thought it was his horse...as we were opening gifts I noticed him dragging it away from the chairs. When we asked where he was going he just said "I'm going to go ride it" and kept walking. Lin managed to save the horse and he's safe in the nursery.

Making the most of a Sunday
Once we got home I got started in the kitchen. My list included stew, chicken tacos, lasagna and biscotti. A little ambitious, don't you think? However, with Lindsey's help, I got everything cooked, most of it in the freezer and the kitchen is almost clean. I didn't bother with photos, but here are some recipes.
Stew
- 1 chuck roast, cubed
- 1/2 onion
- 1 bell pepper
- 2 small cans tomato sauce
- 2 cans stewed tomatoes
- 1 can mixed vegetables
- 1 can corn
- 2 russet potatoes, cubed
Normally I do stew meat that is already cut up, but Kroger had chuck roast on sale this week. The package came with two really nice sized roasts so I froze one and used the other.
Start by browning the meat with the onion and bell pepper, add salt & pepper and any seasoning you like. Once browned, drain off most of the fat. Add all of the canned items and potatoes and simmer until the potatoes are cooked.
Once I finished I realized that I forgot my favorite thing for roast - cabbage. We grocery shopped yesterday and I never thought to buy a cabbage but the whole time the stew was cooking I kept thinking that something was missing. As soon as I spooned a bowl up for dinner I knew exactly what it was!
Lasagna
- 1lb ground beef
- 1 jar spaghetti sauce
- lasagna noodles
- 1 16 oz container ricotta cheese
- 2-3 cups mozzarella cheese
- Parmesan cheese
This is a really easy lasagna recipe I found years ago. Usually Jason is the spaghetti sauce person in the house - he's in charge of dinner for that night. But if we want lasagna that's considered my "easy" meal. Lindsey actually cooked this and as soon as we put it in the oven I realized that I wanted to cook it in an aluminium pan to freeze! Instead I just cooked it in the pyrex dish and split it after - keeping some for dinner tomorrow and putting the rest in the freezer.
Start by browning the beef with salt, pepper, garlic & onion powder, and oregano. ((You can also add 1/2 lb ground sausage to give it more meat)) Add the spaghetti sauce, stir. In a 9*13 dish, layer 1/3 of the meat sauce on the bottom. Arrange 1 layer of noodles next. Note: you do not need the "no cook" noodles. Any will do. After noodles, spread 1/3 of the container of ricotta cheese on the noodles, topping with 1/3 of the mozzarella cheese. Repeat for the next 2 layers - meat sauce, noodles, ricotta & mozzarella cheese. Top the last layer with shredded Parmesan cheese. Pour 1/4 cup hot water around the outside of the dish and cover with 2 layers of foil. Bake for 30-40 minutes or until bubbly.
Crock pot Chicken Tacos
- 1 package boneless, skinless chicken breasts or tenders
- 1 package taco seasoning
- 1 container fresh pico de gallo
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1/4 cup water
Pour the package of taco seasoning in the bottom of the crock pot. Add the chicken - it can be added frozen. Top with the pico, olive oil & water. Do not stir. Cook on low for 4-6 hours, turn the chicken halfway if you are home, but if not - don't worry. Remove the chicken and shred, returning back to the crock pot for another 20-30 minutes of cooking on low. Serve with tortillas & cheese or use to make enchiladas.
This recipe has been floating around the Nest for a few weeks and has gotten rave reviews. It is super easy - especially since you can toss the chicken in frozen.
As for the biscotti - I've made it before. It's one of my standards for the Holiday Season. I'm not sure if much of that will actually make it to the freezer...but I have enough pistachios and cranberries that I can easliy make another batch.

36 Weeks and Counting
Kind of hard to make out, but that's a foot and little toes. The foot that keeps pushing against my right side!
Apparently he'd had enough here - he was covering his face. Jason says it looks like he's giving the bird.
For now the status is that we'll just wait and hope he decides he needs to come sooner rather than later. Mostly because he's estimated to be about 8lbs from the ultrasound. Now, those can be off - I've heard anything from 1 to 2 lbs off either way. So he could be 6lbs...or he could be 10lbs. She said that we won't talk about an induction until I'm 39 weeks and dilated a little more. And she also said that if he's still comfy by his due date we may talk about a c-section. I'm 100% ok with this for various reasons. First, my hip. Second, his potential size. She's been very open about saying that with babies who may be big she'd rather not risk trying a natural birth and ending up with an emergency c-section since it is a higher risk for both mom and baby. I know there are a lot of people out there who probably think this would be unnecessary and crazy. But since it's my kid...and I trust my doctor...I'm ok with it. I believe in 'better safe than sorry.'
